China installs renewable energy equivalent to half of Europe’s electrical capacity in the Gobi Desert.
China is investing in renewable energy. The most striking example of the massive facilities it has built is in the middle of the Gobi Desert, where several photovoltaic farms have started to generate electricity. This electricity can equal half of the electrical power installed in Europe or the US.
Across the northwest, This veritable sea of solar panels has a combined power of 600 GW, an amount we can purchase with Spain’s 116 GW total of all its technologies.
The goal is to reduce the intermittent nature of output through renewable energy sources. In China, this implies that daily contributions can vary by up to 50 GW, the same as the installed power of all of France’s nuclear power plants combined. This dedication has been reinforced by the construction of major backup hydropower units on the Yellow River.
A set of plates connected by ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission lines has been installed to improve this intermittency. According to its promoters, this allows large amounts of energy to be sent over long distances with almost no losses during the journey, at a rate of approximately 95%.
This commitment allows for the efficient utilization of energy resources in remote areas where access to cheap and unlimited electricity is made possible by favorable environmental conditions. These locations have high and inexpensive space availability, and population growth is dependent on the job creation.
A project that also enables the Chinese industry to expand the amount of solar energy it uses, providing affordable and clean energy.
In addition to the obvious consequences—such as the ability to feed the voracious artificial intelligence, which is becoming more and more energy-hungry—it also raises questions about the manufacturing sector’s competitiveness and makes it possible for China to produce electric vehicles and batteries with decreasing reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, prices are becoming better while already being competitive.
