2024 Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+: two new PHEV sports cars arrive with up to 612 HP and 101 km of autonomy
We knew that Mercedes had somewhat retreated from its goals to electrify its lineup, cautioning that plug-in hybrids would continue to be influential in the coming decade. The AMG sports division has also signed two additional new plug-in models that the star brand has recently unveiled.
Unprecedented in its design, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ is a plug-in hybrid vehicle initially unveiled in April last year. The German automaker chose to bring back the E 53 model. Additionally, this technology is offered for the saloon and estate body styles.
In many Mercedes models, AMG and plug-in technology go hand in hand; however, the company’s large sedan does so for the first time. A 3-liter gasoline engine with six cylinders and 14 horsepower more than before is located under the hood. It has a turbocharger that operates at a higher pressure.
The figures combine 585 horsepower and 750 Nm from the electric motor with the same nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic gearbox. However, for a brief period, the optional Dynamic Plus package’s “Race Start” function allows a maximum power of 612 horsepower. It can travel up to 140 km/h in electric mode and 280 km/h in hybrid mode. It takes 3.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.
With a helpful capacity of 21.2 kWh, the 400-volt battery powers the new Mercedes-AMG E plug-in hybrid to an announced electric range of 101 kilometers. It has an 11 kW standard charger, but you can choose one with a 60 kW direct current. You can charge it from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes.
A design and dynamics to match
The unique features on the exterior and inside of the AMG-signed E-Class are standard, as they usually are: a distinctive front grille with illuminated vertical slats, more oversized air intakes, side skirts, a rear spoiler for the sedan, a rear diffuser with four exhaust outlets, and front wheel arches that are 11 mm wider than the rear.
Interior
Standard features include an AMG Performance nappa leather steering wheel and AMG sports seats, which can be upgraded with optional AMG Performance seats. The MBUX Superscreen multimedia system on the dashboard and the translucent grey ash wood trim also stand out. You can select a screen for the passenger, among other things.
Not to be overlooked are the various driving modes, high-performance AMG brakes with 370 mm up front and 360 mm at the back, adaptive shock absorbers with AMG RIDE CONTROL suspensions, active rear steering, 19-inch standard wheels (20 and 21 optional), and 4×4 traction with rear differential.
The standard features—Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Smoothness, and Individual—and two additional ones—Electric and Battery Retention, which includes a one-pedal driving system—are included because of plug-in hybrid technology.
Mercedes will first sell the Limited Edition 1 series, which will come with more standard features at an unspecified cost. The starting price of the E-Class PHEV in the USA is $62,300, and 57,507 euros in the European market for the E300e model.
