US EV Sales and Charger Availability Hit Record Highs in November 2024
The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States is accelerating at a record pace. According to the latest monthly update from the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, November 2024 witnessed groundbreaking progress in both US EV sales and public charging infrastructure.
EV Sales Continue to Surge
November 2024 was a banner month for EVs in the US. A total of 141,442 plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) were sold, including 117,929 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 23,513 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). This marks an impressive 11.5% increase compared to November 2023.
Looking at the bigger picture, more than 1.4 million PEVs were sold by the end of November 2024, a 9% jump compared to the same period in 2023. PEVs now represent 10.4% of all light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales, a noticeable rise from 9.4% in 2023 and 6.8% in 2022.
What’s driving this growth? New models like the Honda Prologue and Chevrolet Equinox EV are making waves in the market. Their sales skyrocketed by 65% and 69%, respectively, between October and November. Ford also had a stellar month, with sales of the Mustang Mach-E climbing 79%, while the F-150 Lightning broke into the top 10, boasting a remarkable 96% increase.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure
As EV sales climb, the availability of public charging stations is also growing. In November alone, 2,490 public EV charging ports were added across the country, representing a 1.2% increase in the national network.
A notable contributor to this growth is the addition of 14 new NEVI (National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure) stations, which introduced 56 fast-charging ports in states such as Ohio, Hawaii, New York, and Texas. Here’s where the US charging network stands today:
- 205,000 charging ports spread across 74,500 locations.
- 289 federally funded ports, including those from NEVI, CFI (Charging and Fueling Infrastructure), and RAA (Rural Access Accelerator) programs.
And there’s more to come. Over 24,000 federally funded chargers are in various stages of deployment, signaling a robust push to make EV charging more accessible nationwide.
Why These Numbers Matter
This growth in both EV sales and charging infrastructure underscores the US’s commitment to a sustainable transportation future. Increasing sales numbers indicate that consumers are more confident in transitioning to EVs, while the expanding charger network ensures convenience and reduces range anxiety.
