Tesla finally enters India but with pricey $70000 Model Y
Musk’s Long-Awaited Promise Comes to Life, After nine years of anticipation, Tesla has finally arrived in India, the world’s fourth-largest car market. CEO Elon Musk first hinted at this move nearly a decade ago, and now, with Tesla’s global delivery numbers slipping, the timing couldn’t be more critical. But can the electric vehicle (EV) giant make a mark in a market where luxury cars and EVs are still a niche?

Tesla is kicking off with its Model Y, but it comes with a hefty price tag. Imported from China, the base rear-wheel drive Model Y costs around $70,000—a staggering $25,000 more than its U.S. counterpart (without the $7,500 tax credit). The long-range version, not yet available in the U.S., is priced at $80,600. These prices pit Tesla against luxury giants like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but the Model Y’s crossover design may struggle to stand out in India’s high-end car market.
Today, Tesla unveils its first 4,000-square-foot Experience Center at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s bustling Bandra Kurla Complex. A second showroom is set to open in Delhi later this month. Customers in Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai can place orders starting today, with deliveries for the base Model Y expected in Q3 2025 and the long-range version in Q4 2025.
One major hurdle? India currently has zero Tesla Superchargers. Tesla plans to install four charging stations in both Mumbai and Delhi, featuring DC fast chargers and Level 2 Destination Chargers. However, building a robust charging network in a country as vast as India will be no small feat.
Analyst Jay Kale from Elara Securities told Bloomberg, “It’s not meaningful from a volume standpoint yet, but it plants the brand.” With EVs accounting for just 5% of India’s car market and luxury cars a mere 1%, Tesla’s impact may be limited for now. Rumors of a manufacturing plant in India have been dismissed, but Tesla is hiring aggressively, signaling a long-term commitment. Plans to import from its German factory after an India-EU trade agreement could also lower costs in the future.
Tesla’s entry into India is a bold move to tap into a growing market, but high prices, limited infrastructure, and a small luxury segment pose challenges. Still, with its iconic brand and Musk’s vision, Tesla is betting on India’s potential to embrace EVs over time.
