Tesla’s autonomous driving technology is already subject to multiple federal investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The fatal accident in question occurred in November 2023, when a Tesla Model Y on FSD hit a parked Toyota SUV on the side of the highway, resulting in a pedestrian’s death. The NHTSA is now investigating whether the FSD system can “detect and respond appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions.”


The Technology Behind Tesla’s FSD

Tesla’s autonomous driving system uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a vast neural network to analyze the environment in real time. The car relies on satellite data to understand its location, and its cameras provide a 360-degree view of its surroundings. The results could determine whether relying solely on cameras for autonomous driving is a viable solution or if adding radar and lidar is necessary for safety. Musk’s argument that cameras, paired with advanced AI, should be enough for self-driving technology is intriguing but doesn’t seem entirely applicable yet.
