Honda, Hyundai, Ford, Subaru, and Kia EV Sales Surge in January 2025

EV Sales Surge in January 2025: A Look at the Best-Selling Models (Outside Tesla)

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the U.S. are off to a strong start in 2025. Several automakers, including Honda, Hyundai, Ford, and Kia, reported significant growth in their EV sales last month. With more drivers embracing electric mobility, let’s explore the top-selling EV models in January 2025 and what’s driving this trend.

EV Sales

EV Market Growth

The U.S. EV market closed 2024 on a high note, with nearly 133,000 EVs sold in December, accounting for 8.8% of total car sales—a new record. According to Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book, total EV sales in 2024 reached 1.3 million, marking a 7.3% year-over-year growth.

However, with reports suggesting that former President Donald Trump may eliminate EV incentives, including the $7,500 federal tax credit, buyers are rushing to secure deals before potential policy changes take effect. This anticipation could be fueling the early 2025 sales surge.

Ford’s Record-Breaking January

Ford continues to solidify its position as a key EV player, selling 5,666 electric vehicles in January—a 21% increase and a new January record.

Mustang Mach-E Takes the Lead

  • 3,529 units sold – up 173% from January 2024.
  • One of the best-selling electric SUVs last year, trailing only the Tesla Model Y.
  • Expected to maintain strong momentum in 2025.

F-150 Lightning and E-Transit Face Challenges

  • F-150 Lightning sales slipped by 15%, with 1,907 units sold.
  • E-Transit electric van sales plunged 80%, with only 230 models sold.

Honda’s Prologue Continues to Impress

One of the biggest surprises in the EV market has been Honda’s all-electric Prologue. After making waves in 2024, the trend continued in January, with 3,744 Prologue units sold.

Honda Prologue’s Rapid Rise

  • Launched in March 2024.
  • Finished 2024 as the seventh best-selling EV in the U.S..
  • Outpaced competitors like the Chevy Equinox EV (28,874 sales) and Rivian R1S (26,934 sales).

Honda’s success demonstrates the growing demand for affordable, practical EVs with strong performance and range.

EV Sales

Hyundai and Kia Maintain Strong Sales

Hyundai and Kia are emerging as dominant forces in the EV space, boasting double-digit growth in key models.

Hyundai’s Top Performers

  • IONIQ 5 sales surged 54% to 2,250 units.
  • IONIQ 6 sales climbed 15% to 871 units.
  • The upgraded 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5, featuring increased range and an NACS charging port for Tesla Superchargers, is expected to further boost demand.

Kia’s EV Lineup

  • 1,542 EV6 units sold, maintaining steady momentum.
  • EV9 three-row SUV saw a slight dip from 1,408 sales in January 2024 to 1,232 in January 2025.

What About General Motors and Tesla?

Unlike other manufacturers, GM and Tesla do not report monthly U.S. sales figures. However, we know from Electrek that Tesla saw its first annual sales decline in California last year. GM’s quarterly sales report, expected in April, will provide more insights into the Chevy Equinox EV, Blazer EV, and Silverado EV’s performance.

The early momentum in EV sales suggests that 2025 could be another record-breaking year. However, several factors will shape the market:

  1. Potential Policy Changes – If federal EV incentives disappear, buyers may rush to purchase before tax credits expire.
  2. New Model Launches – Upcoming EVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 7, Ford Explorer EV, and updated Tesla Model 3 will shake up the competition.
  3. Expanding Charging Networks – More automakers adopting Tesla’s NACS could make EVs even more accessible to the masses.
